If Oswald Hadn’t Used Counterfactuals, My Robot Would Have

چکیده
This paper presents a computation model that emulates the process by which humans generate, evaluate and distinguish counterfactual sentences. Though compatible with the “possible world” account, this model enjoys the advantages of representational economy, algorithmic simplicity and conceptual clarity.

Back on track: Backtracking in counterfactual reasoning
Would Dan have died if Bob hadn’t shot? In this paper, we show that people’s answer depends on whether or not they are asked about what would have caused Bob not to shoot. Something needs to change in order to turn an actual world into a counterfactual world. Previous findings of how people reason about counterfactuals have been mixed: sometimes people appear to backtrack and reevaluate the cau...
متن کاملWhat Should I Believe About What Would Have Been the Case?
The question I am addressing in this paper is the following: how is it possible to empirically test, or confirm, counterfactuals? After motivating this question in section 1, I will look at two approaches to counterfactuals, and at how counterfactuals can be empirically tested, or confirmed, if at all, on these accounts in section 2. I will then digress into the philosophy of probability in sec...
متن کاملWhat Counterfactuals Can Be Tested
Counterfactual statements, e.g., ”my headache would be gone had I taken an aspirin” are central to scientific discourse, and are formally interpreted as statements derived from ”alternative worlds”. However, since they invoke hypothetical states of affairs, often incompatible with what is actually known or observed, testing counterfactuals is fraught with conceptual and practical difficulties. ...
متن کاملMental contrasting of counterfactual fantasies attenuates disappointment, regret, and resentment
“If only I had married that girl, my life would have been different. We would have been a good match for each other and we would have made a great couple...” Such mental representations of how our lives could have been better are termed counterfactual, representing an alternative scenario to the factual past (Kahneman and Miller 1986; Kahneman and Tversky 1982; Roese 1997). People who engage in...
متن کاملComplex antecedents and probabilities in causal counterfactuals∗
Ciardelli, Zhang, & Champollion [5] point out an empirical problem for theories of counterfactuals based on maximal similarity or minimal revision involving negated conjunctions in the antecedent. They also show that disjunctions and negated conjunctions behave differently in counterfactual antecedents, and propose an attractive solution that combines Inquisitive Semantics [4] with a theory of ...
